FIVB
Executive Committee to support or to block
the Golden Formula
DOHA,
January 27, 2010 – Although Mr. Wei Jizhong
(China), the president of the International
Volleyball Federation, FIVB had made two
clear and important remarks during a meeting
of the International Coaches Committee in
Lausanne on January 18, 2010.
1- The first remark is saying that all are
willing the Golden Formula to be implemented
except the leading teams in the world, and
therefore, he asked the committees to study
the Formula carefully and thoroughly.
2- As for the second remark, it says that
international volleyball is under the
monopoly of a small number of world teams
not exceeding the proportion of 20% such as
Brazil, the United States, Russia, Italy,
Serbia, Poland, Cuba, etc... and he would
like to see more teams joining the elite of
international volleyball like Iran and
others....
The joint meeting of the Rules of the Game
Committee, Coaches and Referees, on January
19, 2010, in the FIVB headquarters, chaired
by Mr. Mayer, President of the European
Federation, FIVB Vice-President, recommended
to the FIVB Executive Bureau not to approve
the implementation the proposed Golden
Formula, based on the report submitted by
Mr. Mohamed Habib, Secretary of the Game
Rules Committee concluding that the Golden
Formula is not suitable for Women and Youth
categories and that it cancels the quick
attacking actions.
Mr Habib did not mention any of the points
listed in the report of the Qatar Volleyball
Association, QVBA, on the statistical test
of the Golden Formula, video documented,
which proves that the formula does not
cancel quick attacking game and that many
times such as Iran conducted many
spectacular attacking combinations from the
back zone and that only European teams opted
not to make quick attacks.
The Qatari report on the Formula also
stipulated that we cannot say about the
Golden Formula that it does not suit women
and youth categories before to effectively
testing it on these categories.
It is regrettable that Mr. Mohamed Habib
from the Rules of the Game Committee and Mr.
Philippe Blain from the Coaches Committee
have adopted the point of view of the
leading top teams without mentioning the
positive aspects underlined in the report on
the Golden Formula such as:
1- The Statistical analysis show that the
test was highly conclusive due to the
presence of excellent quality counter
attacks whose proportion went up from 19% to
29%, as well as a reasonable increase in the
time of rallies which reached 6.65 sec.
2- The significant decrease in number of
unforced rally interruptions from the serve
in the proportion from 22% to 17%.
3- Despite the fact that some teams chose
not to play fast attacks form the back zone,
other teams conducted spectacular fast
attacking combinations from that back zone.
4- The moderately tall players representing
70% of the world population will have a
bigger chance to join the volleyball game et
be side to side with giant players. The
example was given by Iranian team who beat
Brazil although despite their lower size
average.
Mr. Hussein Imam, the QVB Technical
Director, member of the International
Coaches Commission, said “It is up to the
FIVB Executive Committee to approve the
committees’ recommendation in line with the
top teams in the world representing only 20%
of volleyball players, are not keen to
implement the Golden Formula or to support
the majority interest in the Golden Formula
in line with the remark of the FIVB
President.”
“I am still convinced that the Golden
Formula is the ideal solution for the major
long-standing problems of the game of
Volleyball which are the short rallies and
the serving mistakes and that it will give
to the medium tall players the opportunity
to join and participate in the game beside
the giant players.” Hussein said. |
