Kidney Cool on Ireland Win

Declan Kidney could be the target for a fair amount of scowling from his players, this week, after the maths teacher-turned-coach declared that Ireland’s huge 42-10 win over union minnows, Italy, was not good enough. “You can’t let yourself get carried away with the scoreboard”, Kidney explained.

The fixture, played on Saturday, was important for a number of reasons; it was Ireland’s first win in the Six Nations, the largest victory margin so far in the competition, and the green team’s first victory in four at Lansdowne Road. People following the Six Nations betting odds should bear this in mind.

Ireland scored five tries in Dublin, to hand the Azzurri their third defeat in a row in the Six Nations. Efforts from Keith Earls, Andrew Trimble, Tom Court, and a brace from Tommy Bowe made the difference on a clement February day. Jonny Sexton added the extras – and a couple of penalties, to boot.

However, while Ireland celebrated, Kidney pondered team sheets. The former Munster and Newport Gwent Dragons coach claims that Italy were flattered by the scoreline: “We can’t run away thinking we’re great just because we stole a couple of tries in the last few minutes”, Kidney said.

Kidney was ostensibly trying to keep his players’ collective feet on the ground ahead of Ireland’s crucial clash with France, which was rearranged earlier this month to compensate for poor weather in Paris. The Irish coach referred to the coming weekend’s fixture as a “singularly huge challenge”. Those betting on rugby need to remember this.

“We were a bit better [against Italy] than against Wales”, Kidney conceded, adding that Ireland had taken their chances going forward. The coach appeared to intimate that, against a more experienced team, such as France or Wales, Ireland may have struggled to gain – and keep – the advantage.

France are strong favourites to win on March 4, coming in at 1/3 in the bookmakers’ window. Their opponents, Ireland, stand on 3/1 for the win.

Williams Given Sony Open Wildcard

One half of the Williams tennis sisters, Venus, has been granted a wildcard entry to the Sony Ericsson Open, a tournament that begins in Miami, Florida, on March 19. She is joined by Chilean veteran, Fernando Gonzalez, and Argentine player, David Nalbandian, on the list of players with gratis entry to the Open.

Venus Williams has not played professionally, with the exception of a recent appearance in the Fed Cup, since she pulled out of the US Open in August 2011. The three-time Olympic gold medal winner is suffering with bouts of Sjogren’s syndrome, a condition that causes the body to attack its own moisture-producing glands.

Adding to her woes is the fact that Venus’ most recent season was blighted with unrelated injuries; in particular, a hip condition forced the American to abandon last year’s Sony Ericsson Open, as well as the Roland Garros and the Madrid Open. Consequently, Williams will be making her first appearance at the Sony Ericsson in two years. Those following the best in-play online betting will be keeping an eye on things.

Venus won the event three times in four seasons between 1998 and 2001, while her sister, Serena, held the Open title between 2002-04, and 2007-08. The Williams sisters’ decade-long domination of the tournament was snapped by Victoria Azarenka in 2009. Kim Clijsters won the competition in 2010, followed by Azarenka, once again, in 2011.

Speaking of the upcoming Open, Venus said: “I have spent most of my life in Southern Florida and view the Sony Ericsson Open as a hometown event”. The tennis player added that she has had “many great experiences playing [in Miami]. “I look forward to returning in the coming weeks.”

Williams’ fellow wildcard, Fernando Gonzalez, recently announced that the Sony Ericsson Open would be the last event of his career. The 31-year-old, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, plans to retire at the end of the tournament.
