Is Michael Phelps the Greatest Ever?
Just one look at Michael Phelps’ Olympic record is enough for anyone to lavish him with praises. The 16-time Olympic gold medal winner has bagged more silverware than anyone in the history of the competition and he could extend his record a bit more in his final few races at the London Games.
He has reached legendary status and receives widespread acclaim from big personalities on daily basis. South African swimmer Chad le Clos, who is one of Phelps’ swimming peers, recently admitted that the American is his idol and such remarks coming out from one of your competitors is undoubtedly a remarkable feat.
He has won more than other Olympic stars at the Games but has he done enough to be considered the greatest ever?
American tennis player Serena William was recently asked to disclose what she thinks of Phelps and she described him as “the ultimate Olympian.”
“I mean, who does that? No one else could do that. It’s insane,” she added.
The man nicknamed the Flying Fish started off slowly in London and couldn’t even finish on the podium in his first event, but eventually found his rhythm and medals started to pour in as usual. As soon as he broke Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina’s record of most Olympic medals, the calls of him being the greatest Olympian ever increased significantly.
He received a glowing tribute from Chinese shooter Chen Ying, who said: “Yes, for me he is the greatest. Michael Phelps is a role model for all athletes in the world. In swimming, competition is like a battlefield. He inspires others to go for gold as well.”
And then Mauritius’ beach volleyball player beach volleyball chipped in with some appreciative words of her own for the big American. “For sure because he won so many medals swimming for the USA and to keep doing good like this is amazing. I mean, nobody did that before. It’s great,” she said.
Former American sprinter Maurice Greene was also asked to share his thoughts and he also seemed to agree with the general opinion.
“Once you do something that nobody has ever done before, it automatically puts you in that category. It’s an arguable debate, but he has to be in the top,” Greene said.
There are some like Sebastian Coe who disagree, but such opinions are rare and the general consensus among the Olympic betting community is that the 27-year-old Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever.
